Japan Foundation’s Acclaimed “Tokyo Before/After” Photography Exhibition Displayed at the SOSORO Museum
The photo exhibition Tokyo Before/After, organized by the Japan Foundation and the Embassy of Japan, officially opened on March 21 at the SOSORO Museum in Phnom Penh. Originally scheduled from March 22 to April 13, the exhibition has now been extended by four additional days, running until April 20, due to the overwhelming support and positive feedback it has received!
Don’t miss this opportunity to experience Tokyo’s transformation through these stunning photographs. Please note that the museum will be closed for three days from April 14 to April 16 before reopening to welcome visitors again.
The inauguration ceremony was presided over by His Excellency Mr. Atsushi Ueno, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to Cambodia, and His Excellency Dr. Sum Sannisith, Deputy Governor of the National Bank of Cambodia. The event was attended by dignitaries, diplomats, and cultural leaders, including Heng Sour, Minister of Labour and Vocational Training, Blaise Kilian, Co-Director of the SOSORO Museum, and Tanaka Haruki, Deputy Director of the Japan Foundation’s Phnom Penh Liaison Office.
Featuring around 80 photographs, Tokyo Before/After juxtaposes historical images from the 1930s and 1940s with contemporary works taken after 2010. The exhibition highlights Tokyo’s evolution in terms of social, economic, and architectural changes. Through a striking “before-and-after” approach, it captures the city’s continuous reinvention as a global megacity.
This exhibition not only reflects Tokyo’s rapid urban development but also invites visitors to explore broader themes of modernization and urban transformation. It draws parallels with other dynamic cities undergoing similar changes. As one of 15 exhibitions organized by the Japan Foundation worldwide, Tokyo Before/After offers Cambodian audiences a rare opportunity to engage with Japan’s cultural and historical narrative.
