Step into Brown Coffee to Explore the Life and Work of Vann Molyvann, a New Landmark in Phnom Penh
The first public exhibition of Vann Molyvann's private residence opened on April 6 in Phnom Penh, drawing architecture enthusiasts and cultural advocates. Titled "Vann Molyvann: Life, Work and Architectural Nationhood", this permanent exhibition highlights the story of how the man known as the "Father of Cambodian Architecture" reshaped the nation through his visionary designs.
Hosted at the Brown Coffee Vann Molyvann Building, the exhibition is open Friday to Sunday with free entry. Visitors can also access a dedicated archive room by appointment, which houses rare materials such as original blueprints, conceptual designs, and construction photographs. These documents, revealed to the public for the first time, offer profound insights into Cambodian modernist architecture.
This initiative is the result of collaborative efforts by cultural organizations, including HKA+Partners and Brown Coffee’s "Hopes & Dreams Project," supported by New Khmer Architecture and the Vann Molyvann family. Together, they aim to preserve and celebrate Vann Molyvann’s architectural legacy, inspiring future generations to appreciate Cambodia’s unique design identity.
During Cambodia's "Golden Age" in the 1950s and 60s, Vann Molyvann crafted iconic structures that merged traditional Khmer aesthetics with modernist principles, creating the distinctive "New Khmer Architecture." As the nation's first trained architect, he not only designed cities and infrastructure but also shaped the cultural and architectural identity of Cambodia.
