Life and Hope in Printmaking: The Printmaking World of Morn Chear

BOSSBHA's House Gallery in Battambang held the grand opening of printmaker Morn Chear's exhibition on March 22. Born in 1991 in Kampot, Cambodia, Morn Chear is a successful, multitalented visual and performing artist. He is an accomplished contemporary dancer, singer, and visual artist skilled in illustration, painting, drawing, and printmaking. His works often depict scenes from his daily life before and after an electrical shock incident that cost him both arms in his early 20s. Chear graduated from the Epic Arts program and was a former professional contemporary dancer. He and his wife relocated to Siem Reap in 2019, where he is pursuing his art career through Open Studio Cambodia.

Morn Chear's talent shines in printmaking, painting, sketching, and illustration. His artwork illustrates the significance of rice cultivation to Cambodia's economy. Farmers are seen enjoying their harvest, cooking meals together, and cleverly foraging for wild animals. Farmers, resilient like the one in his narrative, resemble birds scavenging for food during tough times. They must use traditional fishing gear and preserve food for future needs. Many struggle to achieve their dreams due to financial constraints or the distance between home and school.
