“CHANNTHY: FEVER” – A TRIBUTE TO THE ICONIC CAMBODIAN SINGER AND CULTURAL LEGEND
AN EXHIBITION CELEBRATING THE LIFE AND LEGACY OF CHANNTHY KAK, LEAD VOCALIST OF THE CAMBODIAN SPACE PROJECT
Phnom Penh, Cambodia – The life and musical legacy of the late Srey Channthy, the beloved frontwoman of the iconic band The Cambodian Space Project, will be honoured in a special photographic exhibition, titled “CHANNTHY: FEVER”, taking place from March 20 to April 3rd, 2025, at the S R A 'A R T Studio in Phnom Penh.
This exhibition marks the 7th anniversary of Channthy’s passing and will provide an intimate and poignant glimpse into her life, both on and off the stage. Featuring a curated selection of never-before-seen photographs taken between 2014 and 2018, “CHANNTHY: FEVER” showcases the vibrant spirit of the artist, capturing her in candid moments, performing with her band, and reflecting her immense contribution to Cambodia’s contemporary music scene.
Srey Channthy’s powerful voice and magnetic presence made her one of the most celebrated figures in modern Cambodian music. As the lead vocalist of The Cambodian Space Project, she helped revive the sounds of Cambodia's Golden Age of rock and roll while bringing her own unique style and energy to the global stage. Her music, blending traditional Cambodian rhythms with Western rock influences, touched audiences worldwide, and her untimely passing in 2018 left an indelible mark on the cultural fabric of Cambodia.
The exhibition will not only honour Channthy’s legacy through photography but will also serve as a heartfelt initiative to support her son, Makara. All proceeds from the sale of the photographs will be donated directly to Makara to aid in his personal growth, including potential educational opportunities. This initiative, made possible by the photographer—who survived the accident, and continued as Makara’s defacto stepfather, with continuous support for him and Channthy’s family —ensures that 100% of the funds raised will benefit the young man’s future, preserving the spirit of Channthy’s care and love for her family.
In addition to the photographic display, the event will feature live performances by celebrated Cambodian musicians. These performances will include acoustic sets from Lewis McTie, Cove Aaronoff (with Japan Guitar Shop), Smack the Unicorn, and more. This musical celebration of Channthy’s life and work will add a dynamic layer to the exhibition, allowing visitors to experience the same energy and passion that Channthy herself brought to the stage.
